“The Smiling Mask” is a Dixon Hawke detective story published in 1921. Dixon Hawke is modelled on his two forerunners, Sherlock Holmes and Sexton Blake. It is of particular interest in this connection that the number of stories featuring Dixon Hawke greatly outnumber those of the other two fictional detectives. In the current story, Dixon Hawke is asked to investigate the theft of an expensive blue diamond known as the Star of Jalna, and the very next day, he is asked to investigate a murder. It does not take him long to realize that the two crimes are closely connected, and he systematically narrows down the number of suspects.
