"The Sign of the Dagger, or The Crime without a Name" is the third in a series of Nick Carter stories featuring the evil magician, Dazaar. In the third story, Dazaar is reportedly in prison after being arrested at the end of the previous volume. However, Nick Carter soon discovers that the man who has been arrested is not Dazaar, but an accomplice who looks like the magician. Carter learns this because of a murder committed by the real Dazaar who is clearly not locked up at all. At the end of the story, Dazaar is still free and mocking Nick Carter.
