NICK CARTER is a fictional private detective who appeared in over 1,500 stories in pulp magazines and paperbacks over a period of more than a century. The first story was published in 1886 and the last in 1990. Some of the Nick Carter stories in the pulp magazines were reprinted in the New Magnet Library book series. One of the books in that series was "Knaves in High Places", which was published in 1914, and contained two Nick Carter reprints. In the first one, a young English aristocrat visits the United States in order to arrange the sale of a large estate on Long Island which he has inherited. The young man is murdered within a few days of his arrival in the States, and Nick Carter suspects that a criminal gang with international connections is responsible for the deed. In the second story, a wealthy broker who buys and sells bonds is stabbed to death in his Wall Street office. Nick Carter believes that an innocent person has been arrested for the murder, and he sets about tracking down the real culprit.
